Tools for Thought#

A tool for thought extends cognitive capability. Writing itself was the first—externalizing memory. Notation systems followed: mathematical symbols, musical scores, programming languages.

Good tools for thought:

  • Reduce friction (easy to capture ideas)
  • Enable connection (linking, searching)
  • Support retrieval (finding what you need)
  • Scale gracefully (work with 10 or 10,000 notes)

The tool should disappear into the practice.
