Ascetics represent those who participated in the second stage of religious cruelty during the moral epoch of mankind, when men sacrificed to their God the strongest instincts they possessed, their “Nature” itself. This festal joy of self-denial shines in the cruel glances of ascetics and “anti-natural” fanatics who took pleasure in their renunciation.
