Modern atheism arises from the refutation of God’s traditional attributes: “the father,” “the judge,” and “the rewarder.” God appears incapable of hearing, helping, or communicating himself clearly. Yet while European theism declines, the religious instinct itself remains vigorous—it simply rejects theistic satisfaction with profound distrust.
