Nietzsche cites Giordano Bruno alongside Spinoza as examples of compulsory recluses and long-persecuted pariahs of society. He warns that such figures, through their long fear and watching of enemies, inevitably become refined vengeance-seekers and poison-brewers, even under the most intellectual masquerade and perhaps without being themselves aware of it.
