Gregarious utility refers to the standard by which moral valuations are determined solely by what preserves the community. Under this measure, the immoral is precisely that which endangers the maintenance of the group. Strong and dangerous instincts such as love of enterprise, revengefulness, and love of power, once honored when needed against common enemies, become branded as immoral when external threats recede and no outlet for such drives remains.
