Nietzsche places Hume among the English philosophers who represent “an abasement and depreciation of the idea of a ‘philosopher.’” Along with Bacon, Hobbes, and Locke, Hume is seen as contributing to the mechanical stultification of the world and the weakening of the philosophical spirit. Notably, it was against Hume that Kant “uprose and raised himself,” suggesting that Hume’s skepticism served as a catalyst for German idealist philosophy.
