Nietzsche argues that behind all logic and its seeming sovereignty of movement lie physiological demands for the maintenance of a definite mode of life. The greater part of conscious thinking, even philosophical thinking, is secretly influenced by instincts and forced into definite channels by these bodily requirements. Valuations such as preferring certainty over uncertainty or truth over illusion may ultimately be superficial necessities required for beings like ourselves rather than absolute standards.
