Responsibility#

Summary#

The desire to bear entire and ultimate responsibility for one’s actions is linked to the impossible concept of causa sui—the notion of being one’s own cause. Nietzsche observes that attitudes toward responsibility reveal character: the vain cling to their responsibility and personal merit, while the weak-willed seek to escape accountability through fatalism. Both positions, whether affirming absolute free will or complete determinism, are ultimately mythological constructs.
