Scipio#

Summary#

Scipio is presented as an exemplary Roman general who modeled himself after Cyrus, emulating his chastity, affability, humanity, and liberality. However, Machiavelli also uses him as a cautionary example: his excessive forbearance and lenient nature led to a military rebellion in Spain, and he failed to punish the misconduct of his own officers. This “easy nature” was criticized in the Senate, where he was called “the corrupter of the Roman soldiery,” demonstrating that too much clemency can undermine a commander’s authority.
