Self-preservation#

Summary#

Self-preservation is commonly regarded by psychologists as the cardinal instinct of living beings, but this view is challenged as a misunderstanding. A living thing primarily seeks to discharge its strength, which is the Will to Power; self-preservation is merely an indirect and frequent result of this more fundamental drive. The instinct of self-preservation is criticized as a superfluous teleological principle, attributed to Spinoza’s inconsistency.
