Self-tyranny#

Summary#

Nietzsche identifies self-tyranny as the defining characteristic of Stoicism, wherein individuals force themselves through hypnotic rigidity to see nature falsely, according to their own moral ideals. The Stoic’s ability to tyrannize over himself leads to the supercilious hope that nature herself can likewise be tyrannized and made to conform to human principles. This self-tyranny is presented as an expression of the Will to Power turned inward, the tyrannical philosophical impulse to create the world in one’s own image.
