Stoicism is presented as an exemplary system of moral constraint that, like metrical rules in poetry, appears tyrannical but ultimately cultivates strength and freedom. Nietzsche argues that understanding Stoicism requires recognizing how such disciplinary systems, through long obedience and self-imposed limitations, become the means by which genuine elegance, boldness, and mastery develop.
